I followed the instructions found here
http://ubuntuswitch.blogspot.com/2007/09/got-ubuntu-get-gnomekde-and-xfce-if-you.html

and appear to have successfully installed xfce on my 8.10 installation.

The problem comes when I get to this step:
"After the installation is over you can LOG OUT and click the session button. Choose the environment you want to test."

I log out but never see any options or a session button. I just get my log-in prompt and it carries me right back to GNOME.

The goal here is to be able to switch between the two and see what works for me. Any ideas?

Are you saying there is no sessions button on the login screen? If that is the case, and you are using gdm (the default login manager for ubuntu), are you using a custom gdm theme?

I was on auto log-in, I shut that off and now I see what I'm looking for. Thanks!
