i tryed to fix vbox as it didn't have a res or over 800*600 and kept crashing my machine as in it froze and the rest froze with it so had to keep switching it off by holding the power button
when i did the things described in this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=926408) thread the graphical interface stopped working and i had to use nano in the terminal thing u get when u have no graphical interface to edit the xorg.conf file
here are some pics of the x server and something else which i can't remember the name of after various stages of trial and error none of which worked so i had to revert all changes to be able to be typing this now:here's pics 1-5
