I wonder if anyone has considered writing a software package which allows you to mark an email as Advertising Span, and then generates a bill to the advertiser for his unauthorized use of your computer? It would probably not get paid, but could be an interesting way to return some of the Spam frustration to companies who pay for the distribution of spam advertising messages.

They send these off animated servers. No people to read your e-mail.

Don't use any system that relies only on the "From" or "Reply-to" headers to send out your bounce/challenge/bill/grumble - they're often forged. A bill to the wrong person might not go down too well!

It looks like some of the responders didn't really read the initial posting. I said "send the bill to the advertisers" not "send the bill to the servers originating the advertisements". There is a difference.

It is relatively easy to find the email for a particular business. Sometimes you can even find email addresses for the corporate officers. You can almost always find a postal address for the company.
