I just bought this computer (http://http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=INSPIRON-531-1B) yesterday (notice how it's out of stock).

It has a good amount of "horsepower", if you know what I mean. I want something that can take advantage of it. It comes with Windows Vista SP1, and I'm afraid I don't have enough memory to run it smoothly. that will be coming with my next allowance (another gig or two). I want something that will take advantage of this (desktop effects, the whole thing) and still run smoothly. Note that I'll be most likely returning to Vista if I can't get MapleStory to run good in vmware after i buy more memory.

Does anyone have any suggestions? i was thinking something with kde 4.

edit: btw, i read this and it's making me worried, should i be worried about this?

WARNING: The solder used in this product contains lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects and other reproductive harm. Please wash hands after handling internal components and circuit boards and avoid inhalation of fumes if heating the solder.

Unless you plan on removing the MB, I would say no.

The solder on your motherboard isn't a real hazard, that warning's just a legaleze umbrella or maybe just FUD.

Everything is considered dangerous to the state of California

Oh, lead, scary.

Off course it's nothing to worry about.

I would put Arch on that box, but if you're new to linux that will be a no-go.

Just install Kubuntu 8.10 or Ubuntu 8.10.

If there is a lead hazard in California, it's probably from high speed lead projectiles of the bullet variety.

heh, unles you plan on grinding your motherboard into dust and then snorting the whole thing i don't think you have to worry about the lead. even then, the lead it contains wouldn't kill you but otherstuff would.

lead is a crap poison it takes prolonged exposure to significant amounts.

i've swallowed plenty of lead shot before and it never killed me, as you will not likely be getting that kind of contact with your motherboard i don't think you should worry.
