What mammal kills more humans every year in the US than any other? Pitbulls? Cougars, Wolves? The answer:

http://technocrat.net/article.pl?sid=05/12/09/0017254

I found this interesting, a bit surprising, and more lighthearted (or just controversial in a different way...hmm. I hope we don't have to move this to the backyard) than a lot of the day's conversation. I thought we could use the diversion.

Edit: added the aside in parentheses

I was going to say that too. Deer are more like innocent victims. People are just plain stupid when they drive. Yacking on cell phones and fiddling with stereos and just plain not paying attention. I live in the hills of southern Ohio and deer are everywhere, especially this time of year. You have to slow down and pay attention to what's going on along the roadsides as well as in front of you.

I am a very safe, very alert driver. You'll have to take my word for it. I have had many close encounters with deer and have been fortunate not to hit any until this year, when during mid-day one of the stupid animals literally saw my car as I was applying the brakes and chose not only to jump out into the road anyways, but to run alongside my car until it reached my front left side at which point IT HIT ME and then stumbled off back into the woods. I trust it was fine... there was no blood and it appeared merely dazed, and no damge to my vehicle as I was by that time going about 10-15 mph.

These animals will sometimes walk right out into the road in broad daylight and just stand there in the face of oncoming traffic. I've had to stop in the middle of the road several times and get out of my car and shout until the deer in question will meander back off of the road. The only thing these animals are victims of of their own tragic stupidity. Unfortunately they are also taking many people along with them.

Now, I realize that automobiles and roads aren't a naturally occuring part of their habitat, so I won't get into that because it's a much more controvercial issue to tackle.

IT HIT ME I lived in a wooded area for about 8 years and had constant near misses with deer and elk. Antelope are more skittish and although I have seen them near a road I have yet to see one on a road. I've had anywhere from one to an entire herd of deer/elk run right in front of my car (once I counted over 40 elk, each over 6 feet at the shoulder and nearly the weight of a cow..yep, I also choose to drive slowly in those areas, but even then it isn't always the human's fault when collisions occur).

I know it's not malicious, they just don't know any better (hey, maybe I should start a thread on that topic! Nah. Why fan flames that have died down.) :) :)

This is a true story.

In Pike County Indiana a man was driving down a backroad when a deer ran out in front of him. The deer jumped up and ended going through the truck's windshield. In a panic it kicked wildly hitting the man multiple times and breaking the back window before escaping out into the bed of the truck and leaping out to freedom. The irony is the man had been hunting and there was a dead deer in the truck bed.

Another excuse to eat some venison...mmmmmmmmI like venison (IMHO elk is much better, though). I haven't been deer hunting in years...not that I was even any good at it anyway. I ended up selling all my guns and buying more guitars, effects pedals and amplifiers figuring that I would use them more often.

At this point I would like to extend my thanks to deer all around the US to their good work.

they may not kill us, but we're losing the cold war.

I just watched trading spouses for the first time this week. I thought it was completely insane already, but that clip makes what I saw look tame. Now I might have to keep watching.

Anyways... yum, venison...

Last post on this, then back to business.

Re: President Bush
I didn't vote for him either. Plus I was living in a Muslim country next door to a wonderful Iraqi family when the most recent invasion took place. The adults were all understanding that I had nothing to do with the war, but the 4 year old son kept yelling at me and calling me a murderer of children for several weeks...that was a bit uncomfortable. The rest of the family was quite apologetic and was always friendly and defended me and my family openly in the community--verbally, nothing else was necessary.

Okay...
We can start another politics thread if we need to...in the meanwhile, we should get this back on topic. Deer are killing helpless humans all over the place. Something must be done! :)
