You could add
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid mainto your sources.list then install open office 3
Open a terminal (Applications Accessories>Terminal)
then
gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list add the above repos
then save and back in the terminal
sudo apt-get updatethen
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Or open Update manager and install upgrades after adding the above repo to sources.list

I feel threatened to use such commands (please don't take it negatively if you're not a crook):?.

This worked perfectly for me:

I'm running 8.04, and have 0 issues running OoO3. 3 seems a little faster even.

So long as you don't have the openoffice.org-kde package installed
