hi,
how to upgrade my current Ubuntu 8.04 into 8.10 using the Live CD??
I downloaded that iso without knowing that the upgrade process doesn't work with the Live CD, but is there any way to do that???
I can't download the alternate CD cuz I have a Dialup connection!!! I spent a lot of time trying to download the Live CD.
Please help.
All the best.

Can't upgrade with the Live CD, but you can save data and /home and do a clean install

If you have downloaded the iso allready, than burn it to a disc, backup your stuff on a flash pen, external hard drive or something. and reinstall.
That's probably the cleanest and easiest way to do it.

I don't want to reconfigure everything again!!!
I have a slow internet so i don't want to upgrade and download the configurations again like the mp3 codecs and other stuff :(
I currently have Ubuntu 8.04 and downloaded the alternate Ubuntu Studio 8.10 iso file. Can i upgrade into Ubuntu Studio 8.10 using that iso???

what do you mean by saving data and "/home"????
Can i install Ubuntu 8.10 over the current one??? i.e in the partitioning step can i install the 8.10 on the same partition of the current one then it removes the old system and install the new system??

Well I agree that the best way to upgrade is to do a fresh install.
It would be very helpful, if you have /home on a seperate partition or even better on a different HDD.
Then you can clean install, and guess what... you will not loose your settings, or preferences, or e-mails :-)
Just make sure you don't format the /home drive or partition.
Hope that helps :-)

You could do this before doing a clean install:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome
Then during installation; go 'Manual' and pick the old partitions. DO NOT FORMAT /home. You can ignore /swap.
