wine -- what is a wine bottle?

I am a little confused.
Could someone tell me what is this "bottle" concept as related to the wine program?

If i recall it's something used by CrossOver to use multiple WINE configurations on one system.

If you're using WINE by itself you'll likely never use such a setup.
