I upgraded to 8.10 today and now I am stuck in low graphics mode. When I attempt to go into the Nvidia X-Server settings menu in Administration it tells me that I am not using the nvidia x driver and asks me to run nvidia-xconfig as root and restart the x server. However, when i run nvidia-xconfig it gives me a bunch of warnings and says that is unable to write to directory /etc/X11. I'm stuck!

Have you checked if the restricted driver is enabled under System/Admin/Hardware Drivers? The error with nvidia-xconfig is probably related to the lack of admin privileges. It should be run as root, <sudo nvidia-xconfig>.

I ran the command using sudo with the same result. In restricted drivers it says that the Nvidia driver is active

OK, how about <sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg>.

OK, how about <sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg>.

OK, I did that and restarted. Nvidia driver is still not running. Ran nvidia-xconfig and it told me "validation error: data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup device section "configured video device" must have a driver line. new X configuration file written to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

restarted computer and still in low graphics mode. By the way, in restricted drivers it says driver 177 is active.

Thanks for helping me buddy, I can usually find the answer somewhere on the forums but tonight I'm really stuck!

could you post "lsmod | grep nvidia"

Could you also post your xorg.conf file?

What happens when you run "sudo nvidia-settings" does it complain about drivers?

$ lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia 3934028 0
agpgart 34760 2 nvidia,intel_agp

sudo nvidia-settings gives me this

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.

I wonder why xconfig complains that nvidia is not the driver in xorg.conf. Let's check if 177 is installed. <dpkg -s nvidia-glx-177>

There are problems with xorg in 8.10
You upgraded-some people here would blame your problem on that saying you should do a clean install instead.
You might try to install envyng and use that to install the driver. If that doesn't work you may have to do a clean install.

I have tried installing envy, however it doesn't show up in the menu at all. It says it is installed in synaptic, but I can't find it. Would reinstalling X work as opposed to a clean install? I've got a lot of data i would rather not lose.

I don't have an answer but I just wanted to interject that I have an 8800 gts and it's working perfectly, so things should work out for you.

All I did was enable the restricted driver when it comes up on the first boot.

I sure hope everything works out! Now my machine won't even turn on lol!

Do you mean there is a power problem, a boot problem, or a black screen after boot?
Back to the original problem, I thought of trying to fix xserver through recovery mode (usually the second boot option). If you manage to turn the machine on, try selecting the recovery mode option at the boot menu, and then select 'Try to fix xserver' option.

After I got your email, I booted my machine up. Once at the desktop everything froze and I had to do a hard restart. However, power light comes on and I can hear the fans running, but the HDD light is off and no signal is going to the screen. Also, I tried "Try to fix xserver" option a few days ago to no avail. Hopefully I can get my machine back on... I'll pm you if I do...

Hey guys, I'm trying to get my 8800gts working as well..nothing happens when I try to activate the restricted drivers, it pops up with a small window saying "downloading and installing" but afterwards still says "Driver not activated" next the radio button. I've also tried going to the nvidia site: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_180.51.html, but when I try and run
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg1.run I get
sh: Can't open NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51.pkg1.run

What am I doing wrong? Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

OK wow, just tried it again and it decided to work? Is version 177 the most up to date, I'd assume not..but would anyone be able to direct me to the version that is?
