press alt+f2 and run
gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
and then see if the section for timeout is set to 0, if it is youll want to change it to something else. that number is the timer and it counts in seconds. next youll want to look and make sure that hidden menu is not turned on. if it is you can put a # in front of it to turn it off. your sections would look something like this

## timeout sec
# Set a timeout, in SEC seconds, before automatically booting the default entry
# (normally the first entry defined).
timeout 10

## hiddenmenu
# Hides the menu by default (press ESC to see the menu)
#hiddenmenu

EDIT: and for good measure lets make sure you didnt accidentally overwrite your xp install when you installed ubuntu. what is the output of
sudo fdisk -lu

Please copy/paste the result of

sudo parted /dev/sda print

In terminal put in code
sudo fdisk -lu and
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst then cut and paste the output to the forum. The .lst is the letter L, not the numeral one.
