Im trying to find a way to modify the contents of the applications menu for all users. The homes are automounted from a server and there are over 2k homes on the server so changing items inside the homes is not an option.

Does anyone know of a specific way to remove menu categories (and individual applications as well) from the gnome menu in Ubuntu 8.04?

It seems that there is a lack of a simple method, and many of the methods ive seen do not work for all users.

I need to be able to disable both menu categories (ie other, programming, education) and individual applications.

I tried moving entries out of /usr/share/desktop-directories to desktop-directories/backup but then entries still showed, it did however remove the icons and slow down the menu considerably.

Any other ideas?
