where does live CD store installed stuff?

Say I have an Ubuntu live CD and a machine without hard drive or USB disk or anything. If I do sudo apt-get install firefox, where is installed data stored? All of it is stored in RAM? Could somebody clear that out for me?

BTW, is it possible to install stuff on USB stick? If I want to show my friends Ubuntu with saaaay Firefox and gajim installed. Do I have to install those every time I boot up live CD or can I mount USB stick and then have that software preinstalled?
