8.10 shell drop

ok i am trying to install ubuntu 8.10 i wiped out my old installation of 8.04 (i also previouly had 7.10) but it installs fine but when i try to run the new installation but it drops me into the shell. what do i do?

Maybe there is something wrong with the CD. Have you picked the option to scan the cd for defects at the first menu to make sure the burnt is good? Otherwise, see if you can boot from the same CD with another computer.
