i am completely on ubuntu now with win4lin for two applications that i really need, act 6.0 and quicken. i am testing komposer and it looks like like it will take the place of dreamweaver ok. but the other two i really need.

the problem is that the win4lin is so slooooooooow! does anybody have any suggestion of a virtual set up that is not so slow. i would like something that is public license not commercial. does anyone have something working that will run these two application at anything near normal speeds.

Have you tried Wine? It works fine for me, although a couple of .dll files is missing...

For windows apps in linux, maybe Virtual box or vmware workstation

Instead of quicken maybe you can try http://www.p2paccounts.com/downloads.html
Also
KMyMoney ( http://kmymoney2.sourceforge.net/ )
GNUcash ( http://www.gnucash.org/ )
Gnofin ( http://gnofin.sourceforge.net/ )
Grisbi ( http://www.grisbi.org/ )

Running Windows in a virtual machine will probably give you better performance than Win4Lin. However, the real question is do you really need Act and QB? Act is just a contact manager - there are plenty of web based alternatives that provide the same function. Or you could run SugarCRM, which is a open source alternative to Salesforce.com. QB I can see being harder to replace.

Quickbooks runs rather well on Crossover Linux. I know you said you wanted a free application, but they do have a free trial....it might be worth a try.

you guys gave me some great ideas to try out! i have tried kmoney and it works good. the problems with changing act 6.0 it that my office system is windoz, i either have to convert my act to a system that runs on a cross platform win and linux or i am stuck. i haven't been able to find anyway to convert all the data in act. for my purposes it would seem that a better virtual machine is the ticket until i can find a way to convert this data / import it to something else. i think i will try wine and see if that helps.

i will also look at the other contact mgmt appl that were mentioned, maybe they can import the data etc.

any other ideas and suggestions are greatly appreciated

well i got Quicken 2000 basic to work very well on wine. Now to find a solution for Act 6.0 which works very well under win4lin but is slow, as stated prev. the problem i see is converting the data etc. to any other CRM software. sugar crm looks to be the best candidate.
