Dear Ubuntu lords,
I think I'm missing a step when trying to install (or load upon boot?) the driver for my ATI X1950 card.
I tried Installing Ubuntu from the latest 8.10 Boot CD. After the orange status bar slid back and forth for a minute, it then filled up and went black.
After that, every now and then there would be a quick flash - nothing perceptable - and the black would continue. As it was an "active" black, it seemed to me that the card just wasn't talking to the monitor correctly, but was trying.
I then installed from the Alternate CD (no custom options, just default, save for the required entries...username, time and so on). I saw this through to completion. However it continues to boot into the same darkness.
I searched as much as I could before posting, so as not to waste anyone's time. I found out how to boot into the console. I tried a few suggestions; loading the VGA driver, editing the boot menu and so on. I was unable to make any progress.
I did verify that the video card was supported via the appropriate command (sorry...I don't recall it at the moment).
If it helps your reply, I am a fairly advanced Windows user, but with Linux I am a completely green, wet-behind-the-ears noob.
Should I attempt to make a slipstream disc with my specific drivers included?
I am installing on:
CPU: Intel Q9450 2.66 Quad Core
Mobo: ASUS P5WDG2 WS Pro
RAM: 4x1 GB OCZ DDR2 800
Video Card: ATI Radeon X1950
HDD: Seagate 750GB 32MB Cache
Can't thank you enough for your time and thoughts. :p
