Is there a great advantage to running the 64 bit software over the regular PC Ububtu? I have a X64 system with 4GB of memory. It seems that firefox and a few apps had problems with the 64 bit version.

64-bit will be better at utilizing your processor and RAM

(things will run faster if they are 64-bit apps)

can I upgrade the system without reinstalling everything?

No, you have to install a fresh 64-bit copy
