I have an older laptop running xp home. it has a virus and i need to reformat the drive. will installing ubuntu format drive before installing?

If you are wanting to format your hard drive then try using something like dban (http://www.dban.org/) or kill disk (http://www.killdisk.com/)

If your "older" laptop doesn't have 512MB of memory, you might be able to install Ubuntu (if you have 256MB) but you will find it to be so slow as to be all but useless.

You would do better to install one of the following: Damn Small Linux (DSL), Puppy Linux, Zen-Mini (PC LOS 2008 clone for underpowered machines).

When you run the Ubuntu installer it will partition the drive and format them.
