Transfer to laptop

How can I transfer my complete ubuntu system or downloaded and installed softwares (installed) from my hard drive of PC to a laptop? I want to avoid re-download because of slow connection.

when I install a software from source code(make install), where does the software get installed (which dir)? can i delete the code after installation?

how can i make deb package from source code?

Boy! That was 3 threads in one. I'd network your laptop to the PC, install the applications and copy the data over the network; at least that's what I'd do.

You could send off for the free cd, then copy/transfer your files/ settings to the new install.
