I installed the game Enemy Territory and the sound didn't work. First time I had it installed, I used a script

killall esd; et; esd

to make it work, but this time that didn't work. I opened the Volume Applet and changed "Select the device and track to control" from Alsa Mixer to OSS mixer, and it works. Why?

As far as I understand, I just changed which device I can control with the keyboard, the audio playback should still be the same.
So my question is, what exactly do I change with "Select the device and track to control" and why does the game work with one setting, and not with the other?

oss-mixer is still alsa(alsa-oss). it just means the game was written using a older sound setup.
look in synaptic and you can read what alsa-oss does.
i'll put a pic, but my screens not big enough to show the whole thing.
