December 6th, 2008, 06:03 PM
I want to connect my old with my new laptop so to transfer some folders...I have wired them directly,no router between!
I want somebody to tell me what i have to do now...
Another big problem is that my old laptop has a broken touchpad and i have no mouse,so everything must be done via terminal or keyboard!
Thanks in advance and sorry for my english!:)

You could install openssh on both the machines and connect both with a cross-over LAN cable."sudo apt-get install openssh" on the laptop without mouse control.

If you are connecting two machines directly then you need a cross-over cable. You could burn the data on a CD or a USB drive :)

You might as well invest in a Router, they are not expensive these days, under 30 bucks for DLink, about 45 bucks for LynkSys is all.
This also gives you a firewall to the internet to protect your LAN data.
Saves tons of headaches too!
A crossover cable can cost about 1/2 the price of a router anyhow!
And you'll always be accidentially picking it up, thinking it's a LAN cable too after you do get a router.
