Stopped booting to desktop

I hadn't rebooted in awhile and when I did it stopped automatically booting into gnome. I can run the command startx and it works, but where can I put this so it does it automatically?

I guess maybe a better question is how do I boot into text command line or then boot into gnome desktop

Ok more information, now when it tries the first login it looks like it's trying to connect with OpenBSD ssh. WTF! what the hell is going on here?
