I received a Dell from my AP Calc teacher. Dell sent it to her by accident or what ever and windows XP wouldn't work. So i am using a live cd of Ubuntu because i wanted to test it out, and i don't have a windows XP install disk.

I was wondering if it is normal for the installation to stay on the brown splattering screen for long time (it's been there for a couple hours). The mouse cursor is up and i can move it around, but controls are unresponsive (nothing does anything). Is this normal?

Do you know the spec of that Dell machine especially the amount of RAM?

Yeah, 256 mg. It's kinda basic, but hey, it's free. Processor is 2.8 ghz

That could be a problem since I believe the LiveCD needs a little more RAM than that to run, 380MB (or something close to that). So, your best bet is to download and use the alternate CD to install Ubuntu on that machine then.

Yeah, that seems to be the problem as it is even struggling with the "try it before you install it" option.
