CD Install Fails

New to ubuntu. Created 8.10 install CD. Booted older Gateway desktop from CD, chose to Install ubuntu from menu. Status bar goes back and forth for 5 mins followed by what appears to be a start screen with a cursor arrow in the middle. Thats it. Won't go any further after even 1/2 hour. CD, hard drive and machine are all good. Anyone?

What's the spec of your old Gateway machine? Do you have enough RAM to run the LiveCD (desktop CD)?

Otherwise, you can always try using the alternate CD with a text based installer but should be real easy to follow.
