I am currently using 8.10 and have an Maxtor 300GB usb external drive. It is formatted NTFS. I have used this drive fine for quite a while with both my ubuntu and a mac book, but several months ago, the mac book stopped being able to see certain folders and could not write to the drive. When I checked the permissions, the hard drive is set to root, and I am unable to change it (regardless of whether I use gksudo or not).I am able to write to it on the unbuntu machine only. It also doesn't show up in fstab. If I try to mount it, it says it is not in fstab. Can someone please help me change the permission so it can be accessed by other computers?

fstab:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# -- This file has been automaticly generated by ntfs-config --
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>

proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# Entry for /dev/sda1 :
UUID=9a3fd993-5b93-4092-af07-93cf112a51f9 / ext3 relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# Entry for /dev/sda5 :
UUID=872e77ba-5fc8-4ad4-af99-1de04851995e none swap sw 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

fstab.pre-ntfs-config:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# /dev/sda1
UUID=9a3fd993-5b93-4092-af07-93cf112a51f9 / ext3 relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /dev/sda5
UUID=872e77ba-5fc8-4ad4-af99-1de04851995e none swap sw 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

Mount in terminal gets the following:

/dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro)
tmpfs on /lib/init/rw type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,mode=0755)
/proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)
varrun on /var/run type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,mode=0755)
varlock on /var/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,mode=1777)
udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=0755)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=620)
fusectl on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw)
lrm on /lib/modules/2.6.27-9-generic/volatile type tmpfs (rw,mode=755)
securityfs on /sys/kernel/security type securityfs (rw)
binfmt_misc on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)
gvfs-fuse-daemon on /home/nick/.gvfs type fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon (rw,nosuid,nodev,user=nick)
/dev/sdb1 on /media/300 Maxtor type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096)

I appreciate all the help. I have been going through thread after thread and can't seem to figure it out.

Thanks.
