Gnome Not working, when install ubuntu 8.04 on USB flash drive 8GB

Hi,
When i install ubuntu 8.04 on usb flash drive transcend 8GB, booting is fine, but m nt able to get desktop, only terminal application, from slect session is wrking, how to get Gnome Desktop.

I had Gnome disappear once, the only thing I was able to do was to re-install Gnome-common --- it worked ok
