Help Please

Hi, I'm new to Ubuntu; I installed it on my pc and everything was perfect until I installed some updates. My computer restarted, I logged in and all I see is the background picture for the desktop and my mouse pointer. The mouse pointer moves and I can control the volume but that's about it. What happened?!

Yes but to no avail.

try alt+f2 then type gnome-control-center, if it comes up try changing the screen resolution and refresh rate, use 1024 x768 at 60mhz to get you goin
