I have Ubuntu 6 on my laptop and want to upgrade to 8. How do I do this?
The install disc does not offer me an upgrade, and version 6 does not have the software source option. I would like to not overwrite programs and files already installed.
any help is appreciated
Thanks Dan

it is not recommended upgrading from that version !
i would install 8.04 and avoid non LTS versions....
check for bugs' bugs that apply to your system hardware first.

I agree with inode . . .
Back up your personal data and go for a fresh install.
To make your system more future proof, you might want to put your /home onto a separate partition . . . next time youre doing an update, you wont also be wiping your files.

Me too, just copy your /home directory to a USB drive, do a fresh new install of Hardy or Intrepid (Ubuntu 8), and copy any home files back to the new /home/ directory if you want them restored or to keep them.
