View Full Version : [ubuntu] Hard drive and system load constantly high

A few days ago I installed Ubuntu 8.10 x64 on my HP dv6000 laptop. This is my first real experience with Ubuntu as a desktop OS, but definitely not my first experience with Linux.

What I can't seem to figure out is why my hard drive seems to be constantly working (the activity light is continuously solid) and why my system load average is always above 1.00. I've checked running processes and nothing seems to be using too many resources, and the swap isn't being used at all with only about 400MB of my 1GB of RAM being used. The very odd thing is that the hard drive activity meter often reads 5% or less, but it appears that it's constantly working nonetheless.

Any suggestions on things to look at?
