hi,

i've been trying to install some upgrades for the last few days but every time i attempt it I get this message

Not all updates can be installed

Run a partial upgrade, to install as many updates as possible.

This can be caused by:
a previous upgrade which didn't complete
problems with some of the installed software
unofficial software packages not provided by ubuntu
normal changes of a pre release version of ubuntu

so i attempt a partial install and get this message

Could not calculate the upgrade

A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

This is most likely a transient problem, please try again later

and that's that: I'm not allowed to uprade

this isn't really a pressing issue, more wondering whether I actually need to update the software (seeing as the update thing keeps turning up)

any advice?

Try disabling any 3rd party repos from Software Sources (System>Admin>Software Sources>3rd party Software) also try disabling "pre-release" and "unsupported" updates from under the "update" tab if they are enabled then try doing a partial upgrade.
