Anyone know a way to do this on Ubuntu 8.10 ?

Not sure what you mean by rotating, but if you are using compiz, it is possible to get an animated background:

I think I know what Oxidize means. In Windoze ;) there are programs to switch out your background images from a directory so that every time you restart, there is a different desktop wallpaper on display. I do not know of a program to do this in Ubuntu. I'm just a beginner. Hope this helps clarify.

Kubuntu has a setting for wallpaper slide show, I have mine set to change every minute.

wallpaper-tray is what you are looking for. Once installed add this to your Sessions (System>Preferences>Sessions)...

wallpaper-tray
Desktop Drapes is there too (in the repos)
Hopefully DoctorMo will get his program going for Intrepid, works great with Hardy...
