installing programs i cant find in synaptic package manager or the add/remove options

im trying to install a program, songbird in particular, but i cant manage to find it through the normal process, synaptic package or add/remove, all i can find is a place to download the tar file from the website. how do i get this program, or other programs i have found in similar circumstances?

If you search Google "songbird linux" and explore their page, you'll end up with this thread:

that I think has the answer you are looking for.

FYI - For future reference, this site has great info on how to install all types of packages on Ubuntu (and other great info).
