    Is it possible to play windows media player streams under any linux OS?

    yes, with vlc mozilla plugin.

    Add medibuntu repo (google medibuntu) to your sources.list , and install this package : mozilla-plugin-vlc

    yes. with any player, totem, vlc, mplayer and many others (only DRM protected wmv/wma files don't work)
    to install codecs, get the medibuntu repo installed, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
    install the ubuntu-retricted-extras and w32codecs from medibuntu
    type codecs or windows codecs in synaptic package manager search box and install anything that smells codecs there!

    Just keep in mind there may be some windows media that wont work with Ubuntu, but this is because some people like DRM to "protect" them.
