    hiding persitent desktop icons

I've given myself a little project - to make a USB stick that boots ubuntu, and puts the user into a gnome-desktop environment that looks as much as possible like Windows XP, for the purpose of using it at school incognito.

Everything is almost perfect, except that the "install ubuntu" icon automatically pops up on the desktop on every reboot.

is there a way to turn this annoying icon off?

hmm... i guess a rephrasing of this question would be

Where can I go to control what automatically shows up on the desktop.

    I'm staring at the gconf-editor right now and I haven't a clue

So I suppose this cannot be done?

if you don't think it can be done, please tell me... the suspense of not knowing is killing me
