MacBook Pro 5,5 - trackpad not working

    Hi,

since the upgrade from ubuntu precise 12.04 to quantal 12.10 the trackpad of my MacBook Pro 5,5 is not working anymore even on the login screen. Under MacOS the trackpad works properly. Before the upgrade it worked as well under Ubuntu. I have no idea about the reason. However, I found out several things (which are maybe not related):

    1. I got error messages in Xorg.0.log

    Code:
    > cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    [...]
    [ 37.020] (II) config/udev: Adding input device bcm5974 (/dev/input/event8)

    [ 37.021] ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 16.0
    [ 37.021] (EE) module ABI major version (16) doesn't match the server's version (18)
    [ 37.021] (II) UnloadModule: "multitouch"

[ 37.021] (EE) No input driver matching `multitouch'
    [...]
    Is that errro serious?

    2. I can find an entry for a trackpad with xinput

    Code:
    > xinput --list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ Logitech Optical USB Mouse id=10 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
        ↳ Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
        ↳ Power Button id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
        ↳ Sleep Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Apple Inc. Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad id=9 [slave keyboard (3)]
    Does that mean anything?

    3. I tried to reinstall the bcm5974-dkms driver for ppa:mactel-support/ppa. For that I removed the package and added the ppa repository (for quantal)

    Code:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mactel-support/ppa
and tried to install it, but it could not be found

    Code:
E: Package 'bcm5974-dkms' has no installation candidate
Okey, I see that there is no such package listed for quantal in the mactel respository for quantal:

    https://launchpad.net/~mactel-support/+archive/ppa

Therefore I added the mactel respository for natty to my /etc/apt/sources.list

    Code:
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mactel-support/ppa/ubuntu natty main
    deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/mactel-support/ppa/ubuntu natty main
After updating my apt resources I tried again to install bcm5974-dkms and again I get an error message

    Code:
    > sudo apt-get install bcm574-dkms

     bcm5974-dkms

It seems that the package hid-dkms could not be installed. But Why? From here I don't know what to do next.

    4. Weird: There is a kernel module bcm5974 loaded

    Code:
    lsmod | grep bcm5974
Is it a different one to the bcm5974-dkms driver?

I don't know what to do now. I didn't change the xorg.conf. Has anyone an idea how to fix the trackpad?

    Thanks for any help!

Re: MacBook Pro 5,5 - trackpad not working

I've found a work around. Just add in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf the following lines:

    Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "IgnoreABI" "True"
    EndSection
For my Xorg version (1.13.0) the /var/log/Xorg.0.log looks now like:

    [...]
    [ 14060.215] (II) LoadModule: "multitouch"
    [ 14060.216] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/multitouch.so

and after a restart of ther X server the trackpad works.
