Talking The "Must Have" software thread

I was just wondering what are some software apps for ubuntu that you consider "Must Have"

    Please keep them Noob Friendly!!!

    Mine are
    VLC
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-esd mozilla-plugin-vlc
If you have Ubuntu 8.04 you will only be able to get Vlc 8x(which is no longer supported by Vlc)
If you want 9x you can follow this tutorial-[Tutorial]Update Vlc from 8x to 9X (Hardy)

    Gimp
Gimp comes pre-installed but just in case you can install with the following.
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install gimp
I don't exactly remember the version that comes with hardy but if you want a more up-to-date version you can follow this tutorial-[Tutorial]install gimp 2.6 on ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron)

    Liferea
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install liferea
    Vlc For anything Music,video,streaming
    Gimp For photo manipulation
Liferea for rss and atom subscriptions

Re: The "Must Have" software thread

    must have:

Boxee is a free and open source cross-platform media center and entertainment hub with social networking features.
uShare is a UPnP (TM) A/V Media Server to stream audio and videos to Xbox360, PS3, etc
VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware. Basically you can install multiple Operating Systems and run them in a window while Ubuntu is running.
Wine is a compatibility layer for running Windows programs.
DeVeDe create video DVDs and CDs (VCD, sVCD or CVD), suitables for home players, from any number of video files.
Songbird is a desktop Web player, a digital jukebox and Web browser mash-up.
Firefox free and open source web browser currently has 20% marketshare!
Thunderbird is a free, open source, cross-platform e-mail and news client.
HellaNZB retrieves nzb files and fully processes them. The goal being to make getting files from Usenet (e.g.: Giganews Newsgroups) as hands-free as possible. Once fully installed, all thats required is moving an nzb file to the queue directory. The rest; fetching, par-checking, un-raring, etc. is taken care of by hellanzb.
LottaNZB is a GTK front-end for hellanzb.
Pads is a TV Show downloader which uses MYEpisodes/Newzbin for use with hellanzb.

Basically once you've setup hellanzb, pads, and told it which tv shows you want to keep up with, it will auto-download the episodes as they become available every week. its like Tivo for your computer but without having to have a tv tuner. Once you have the videos you can watch them on your big screen tv by streaming them with ushare to your xbox360 or ps3. Or if your pc is connected to your tv, you can use Boxee.

This is a list of software that does not come preinstalled.

Wicd - It is simply the most stable network manager for Linux.
Emesene - For those using the MSN network for IM (like me). More reliable than Pidgin and has never crashed on me.
Geany - Simply can't live without this neat little IDE. I use it strictly for Python.
Audacious - As close to Winamp you can come. It is somewhat slow but the best choice out there.
Xchat - Absolutely the best IRC client
Hamachi - Hassle free VPN solution.

man rsync for backup of data ^^ There's a how-to about using it somewhere on this forum.
    Linux cheat sheet

If you can't afford to loose it, if you don't know how to get it back: back it up.
