If you search this forum and others with “webcam problem” you will begin to fully appreciate what a pain in the backside “we-are-really-only-designed-for-Windows” webcams are in Linux.
This is principally the fault of the hardware manufacturers using closed source drivers. Linux is often unfairly blamed by people who cannot get their Windows webcams to work in a Linux OS.
Several very clever people, especially Michel Xhaard, have come up with ways to make some of these webcams work in Linux.

Plug and Play for a webcam “out-of-the-box” in Linux is usually a distant dream since in addition you also need to be able to cope with Skype, Sound Settings, PulseAudio etc (I am now referring specifically to Ubuntu 8.10).
