Re: Sub notebooks / mini laptops
I also have an Eee PC 701/4G. It works fine, but the keyboard just sucks -- my fat fingers cannot touch type on it. Plus the original "2-hour" battery is now a 45-minute battery.
I am really pleased with the Toshiba NB205 310 that I bought for $380 USD. It has a keyboard that is good enough to use productively. I don't care much for the looks of the netbook remix (reminds me of Xandros on the Eee PC), and KDE is just a bit pokey on it, so I installed elive. But I'm sure Xubuntu would be fast on it too.
The only challenge is the speakers -- the ALSA driver does not have an option for it that turns on the speakers. I set it up with OSS and it works fine that way. Everything else including the webcam just works. Battery seems to be good for 7 - 8 hours.
