Lost top & bottom desktop panels

    Hello all
I'm an absolute newbie to Linux and installed Ubuntu 8.10 tonight. Installation went perfectly and I was able to browse around. I looked through all the settings but don't think I changed anything. I received a notification saying there's over 80 updates to download. Ubuntu downloaded and installed them, and I done a reboot afterwards. Now, after logging in, I see the wallpaper but no top and bottom panels. I've found Help (F1) and was able to launch Firefox from there to post this message. At the login screen, I've tried Options and 'open a new session' I think, and tried Last Session, X script something, and Gnome, but all gives me a desktop with no bars. Also not sure if this is relevant, but my cursor disappears off the right and bottom of the screen like there's a larger desktop there.
    Can anyone advise?
    Cheers
    Mark
