Important note: In some instances, after a kernel upgrade you won't be able to load x.org. "sdennie" made a very useful post where explains how to create a script that will automatically install the drivers when your kernel is upgraded. Have a look here

ps: If anything goes wrong, you can easily uninstall this drivers by following the same steps and when running the installer type:

    sudo sh ./Nxxx --uninstall
    or

    sudo nvidia-uninstall

Home is the easiest way as bash defaults to it.

    Thanks Kosimo!!!

I did get an "out of frequency error" at reboot.

I used recovery mode to get to the console and manually reset my horizontal and vertical frequencies back to 30-70 (using nano) and now all is good.

    Thanks again!

Thank you so much JPorter, adding the x Updates PPA took about seconds and I'm now on the latest driver for my graphics card.

I mean no disrespect to the OP but this method should be up on the first page as the 1st thing to try, it seems to get the latest driver for most people without the need for manual install.

Following your suggestion, I've just added the info in the first page.

Re: nVidia latest Drivers - How to install

finally i got it too work like the way it says on the 1st post here, but after doing this sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop, then the next step without a sudo reboot, it did not work so then i thought how bout rebooting it, so i did that, then I did the sudo sh ./NVIDIA_XXX.run and it installed.. might vary between all of you, but just is a bit weird at times lol but it works for me now..
