    Skype

    Hi:
I am brand new at using Linux. I decided to do a Wubi download since it seemed the easiest. I like it. Just a bit difficult at first to get used to Ubuntu.

I tried to download Skype from this site:

    http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/choose/

I clicked on Ubuntu 7.04-8.04 and downloaded to desktop.

I double clicked and a window opened with title Skype-2.0.0.72.tar.bz2

I clicked on open. Another window opened with 5 folders in the right
panel. I don't know what to do at this point. I don't see anything that looks like an application icon anywhere. I don't know how to put a shortcut quicklaunch tray on top of desk top. Is there a path where I might find the Skype folder with the application and try to make a shortcut? I don't the words "create shortcut" anywhere. Thanks

I'm assuming that your computer is 64-bit, if the .deb file from the website does not work.

    Try this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=432295

    Re: Skype

It's a brand new Acer Aspire 7720-6794 laptop. I think I saw 32 bit in "My computer" or someplace when I was using Vista. I don't know how to check it on Ubuntu. Sorry, it's all so new to me.

when I double click on the download on the desktop, I get an error "wrong architecture i386.

Then the link I posted will probably work. (You have 64-bit)

    Good luck.

    But...
Why you didn't download the .deb version?

If you get the .deb version you will install skype by double click to that file easily and quickly.

    Re: Skype

When I dowloaded the file from the site you indicated, I got the following file on my desktop: skype-debian_2.0.0.72-1_i386.deb When I clicked on it, it started installing skype on my ubuntu.

Files with .deb extenstions should start installing when you double click on them. Perhaps you could check whether you have the 'gdebi package installer' installed in your ubuntu? (check under 'applications' --> add remove.)

Do you know what that error "wrong architecture i386" means. I don't see anything relating to that particular error on the link you sent that leads to this link

Ok then you probably have a 64Bit Ubuntu. Then you can do two things.
If you really don't need a 64bit architecture, you can download and install 32bit ubuntu witch will work fine for almost any single need you probably have and you can easily install many other apps
If you want to keep using 64bit for any reason, then there is a way to install skype: Just follow this link

    Hope it helps

    Re: Skype

you can install skype from the medibuntu repository.

follow the instructions on adding the repository here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu (not sure which Ubuntu version you have installed - probably 8.10 though), run the command at the end
    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update
    and install skype with
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install skype
it should be a lot easier for you. It'll also update skype automatically then.

However, I don't know if it offers the 64 bit package (seems like it does).
