    Mac Book

    Hi all,

I am getting a mac book in the next few weeks I just want to know if its the right decision. I use linux at the moment on my dell and I love Linux

my question is do I dual boot, or run Ubunutu on its own ?

    Also its the 13inch 2.1ghz, 2gb 120gb hdd a good spec ?

If it was a pc I would know but I have never used a mac?

    Re: Mac Book

I'd say a macbook is a pretty good choice. I singlebooted Ubuntu 8.04 and when 8.10 came out, I started dual booting. I'm happy with my setup and computer choice, but it does take some work to get things running smoothly.

I would definitely recommend looking at the Community Docs here and the Mactel Support Team Wiki for more information on what works and what doesn't.

As a side note, it makes things a lot easier if you have your model identifier handy. In OS X you can find it by going to "About this Mac" and clicking on "More Information" It should look something like "Macbook 2,1"

I'm not sure about what model you will get, but I have wireless, isight, touchpad with an OS X feel and bluetooth all working smoothly on my Macbook 2,1.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

You dual boot. You need OS X for firmware updates.

@Rog-Mahal: Good to know, that you have MB 2,1, so we finely got s.b.

There are much more linux-compatible machines available out there. Why get a Mac if only to single-boot.

OS X is a pretty good OS, but if you don't want to run it, why buy a MacBook?

You pretty much *need* to dualboot, and there is a big risk you need to fiddle a lot before everything works (and the third speaker won't work at the moment, that's a bug, and you don't get a mic input or pageup/page down keys, etc, etc.)

All in all, MacBooks are nice. And pretty. And expensive. But now, after having bought one, decided OS X wasn't for me, and gone over to Ubuntu, I have to say that I'm not recommending one if all you want to do it run Ubuntu. For my next portable I'm gonna get an HP again. My HP was great.

    Also its the 13inch 2.1ghz, 2gb 120gb hdd a good spec ?
Well, that's up to you isn't it?
