720p Resolution from intel s-video port via component dongle

Hi there, I am trying to get a higher resolution than 1024 x 768 @ 30 Hz from the svideo port on my acer 5315 laptop. I'm using the svideo dongle which splits into 3 component rca cables to my LCD TV. I think its similar to this problem http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=944148 but my gfx are intel i945 and not nvidia. This works in windows fine but the HDTV resolutions do not appear in the settings panel in my Ubuntu 8.04.

Any help would be much appreciated from this linux newbie. I want to run XBMC Linux to my HDTV which does NOT have a VGA port.

Its quite possible this won't work without special dedicated driver support for switching the svideo connector to drive the (definately very different) electrical signals the dongle expects. This could well be a feature implemented outside the intel chipset.
