    avchd editing in 8.10

    Hi,

I got a Sony HD video cam. One that does avchd. And I guess I got it early because there doesn't seem to be much support for that avchd format just yet.

I found this forum, which is closed
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=529871
but they want all sorts of transcoding and custom ffmpeg compiling

I also found this one, and posted a couple of times trying to get the latest kdenlive (0.7 with AVCHD support) to work...
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...98#post6206498
    but so far, no luck.

This chap has made a plugin for Blender to easily handle AVCHD
    http://www.openfilmmaking.com/blenderavc/
but so far its only for the Windows version of Blender...

Any other suggestions (I am still a ubuntu newb and don't really understand, so please take it slow) would be appreciated. Especially if I can just install, one straight forward .deb which lets me do some basic editing...

    Cheers,

    P

The easiest thing is to use an app like Handbrake or a script like mts2avi to transcode the AVCHD file into a format more widely used by editing apps. Then you can edit it in a NLVE like KDEnlive, Cinelerra etc.

    Handbrake: http://handbrake.fr/

    KDEnlive: http://www.kdenlive.org/

p.s. KDEnlive is supposed to be able to edit AVCHD files but I haven't managed it yet.

I'm working with this as well, using Deevede and assortment of other applications. I will post my findings to you...
