    Re: Is my wireless recognized?

    try:
    # wlist <interface> scanning essid <your essid>

if card and driver are working then you will get some info back about your access point.

If yes - get some info back - then
Your interface is not configured - are you using dhcp, provided by your router?
how is your router set-up? use WEP, WPA, WPA2 ....

    It sure is.

    Do:

    Code:
    sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid jkgnet
    sudo ifconfig wlan0 192.168.1.5 netmask 255.255.255.0
where 192.168.1.x is an ip on the windows machine.
then try to ping the windows box..

See here for an explanation of wmaster0

Not sure I'm making progress 2 problems:

    1. when I assign an IP address to wlan0 it knocks out my existing wired (eth0) internet connection
    2. my sound has died too coincidental to be unrelated

    You are so close!

Is the ad-hoc network showing up in Network Manager?

Do you have a wireless router?

Ran into a few snags and apparently the sound thing is an Intrepid bug had to do a reinstall of 8.04 LTS will run through the steps and report back in a day or two.

Thanks for all your assistance thus far.

    Re: Is my wireless recognized?

I have a similar problem. I just bought a wireless USB card that was on a Linux compatibility list. I can see the device on lsusb. But when I do ifconfig, I don't have wlan0 or wmaster0. How do I get the system (8.10) to use the new wireless adapter?
