ubuntu as VPN server for iPhone

I just got an iPhone (hold the applause, thanks) and I was looking into setting it up as a VPN client. Unfortunately, no one is able to develop a tun/tap driver for it so everyone's favorite openvpn won't work.

What WILL work (on a stock iPhone i might add) is L2TP/IPSec, PPTP, and Cisco IPSec. (read http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1288)

Which of these three is the best to implement on ubuntu for this purpose? The reason for doing this is mostly to protect sensitive data transferred over wifi hotspots and 3g network. It would also be cool to connect to machines on my home LAN, for remote desktop/VNC access and things like that.

There are loads of different solutions you could try, just seach Google!

Is it worth it though? The iPhone doesn't have very good screen resolution, won't you be continually scrolling around?!!
