Installing on HP Mini 1000

So, I figured out the mic problem.

First, you need to do the following.

sudo nano -w /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

Add the following:

options snd-hda-intel model=ref

... then reboot.

Second, under System->Preferences->Sound, make sure Capture is set to ALSA.

Third, go into Volume Control. Edit its preferences. Make sure you can change the following: (1) IEC958, (2) IEC958 Default PCM, and (3) Input Source [the first one]. Make sure the IEC958 and IEC958 Default PCM boxes are checked, and change the first Input Source to Line.

Then open up Sound Recorder and see if it works!

yogipsu, many thanks for the tip. I've been trying to fix the internal mic and now it works with your method. Except I notice that IEC958 and IEC958 Default PCM can be left unchecked.

I still have the following issues and wonder if anyone else have these problems? (I installed intrepid using netboot)

1) can't get the external mic using the combo jack to work yet.

2) screensaver (it only blanks the screen) and sleep doesn't automatically work in battery mode.

3) Wifi using WPA-PSK can't connect with hidden SSID networks. No problem though if using WEP Passphrase or if the SSID is advertised.

4) if you plug in a SIM card in the slot inside the battery socket, a new pan0 device shows up under ifconfig. has anyone gotten 3G mobile to work? (assuming it's possible)

aside from these the mini is working great with ubuntu.

Hey, guys. I too run Ubuntu 8.10 on HP mini 1000 (STAC92xx audio). Instead of running usual install, i chose alternate CD (command line system), then installed Xorg, wmii and so on. Problem == sound.

When tying to play music / test speakers i get no errors, but so sound either.

Yeah, i tweaked/searched a lot ;0)

Hey all--I'm considering getting a Mini 1000, now that the price has come down by $40. A couple of questions.

1) I would like to run it with 2gb of memory. Is there room for another stick, or would I have to replace the 1gb stick with a 2gb one? (I realize that the Linux version, when it comes out, will have 2gb, but my current laptop is about to die)

2) Is the 6-cell battery available yet, do you know?

3) does anyone have a link to a step-by-step on how to install from a USB drive?

Only one RAM slot available. So buying a 2GB stick is your only option.

2) Is the 6-cell battery available yet, do you know?

AFAIK, it will be available in the 1st quarter of 2009.

3) does anyone have a link to a step-by-step on how to install from a USB drive?

Just got my HP Mini 1000 a few days ago (couldn't wait till x-mas to open it haha). So far I'm loving it.

I got the 16gb SSD, 1GB ram, 8.9 inch screen, bluetooth, webcam with mic. XP works well once I switched everything to be more performance oriented. I feel the SSD works extremely well considering I thought it might be a little sluggish. For me, the $$$ for the 10.2 inch screen didn't sound worth it and I am very happy with the size of the screen.

First thing I did after getting everything in XP working was to try and install ubuntu 8.10. I created a bootable usb drive using my other ubuntu machine and started the install process. I ran into a problem when there was no resize option for the SSD partitions. After researching a bit, I found out that the option would show up after running chkdisk on XP. After I ran chkdisk, booted into windows, and restarted the installation procedure the option to resize the XP partition on my SSD showed up.

After that, everything installed quickly and easily. Once I booted into the Ubuntu partition, everything worked great and everything was fully functional. I installed skype but haven't messed around with it too much so I'm not sure if I'll have the mic problem. The only other problem I ran into was that the battery gauge doesn't show the remaining time, only the percentage of battery left. Compiz and emerald are working great and I was especially amazed at how well 480P HD movies ran. The sound is also amazingly loud and clear. Everything is running great on 1 GB ram and I can't see myself needing to upgrade to 2GB considering that I don't think I'll be using anywhere near that much memory in the short periods of time that I'll be running the mini.

Hi all. I have (had) a dual boot hp mini setup (1030 NR). I was unable to install from the memory stick. I was able to get in, but ubuntu could not see my hard drive. I tried solutions for partitioning through windows but these also failed. I eventually had to wipe clean unetbootin (second thing that I had tried) and use wubi to install. I attributed Wubi install failures (stating that the cd was in use) to having already tried unetbootin first.

If I had thought that I would be posting, I would have better documented my travails, but I thought I would share.

Right now I am having to reinstall because I seem to have borked Gnome power manager while trying to install Adobe flash.

I will probably let everyone know how it goes.
