Places menu launches file-roller & password prompt renders wrong after 8.10 upgrade

Whenever I click on a 'place' (except trash and My Computer) in the Places menu (on the top gnome-bar), file-roller is launched and displays me an error message, saying it can't open directories. Nautilus does not start at all unless I open it via other methods.
My second problem is when I used 8.04, I somewhere set the option for the administrator password input window to display as a window, not a splash. After the upgrade, the windows border renders around the splash (see attached)

Note: I always use the latest Ubuntu distro (x86 64) after official release. If to the right of my posts I'm listed as using an old version, I've simply just forgotten to change the forum setting.
