[SOLVED] No desktop effects

I am trying to load desktop effects and my system tells me desktop effects are not loading. I have the 96.43.09 Nvidia driver loaded and glxgears works and glxinfo gives this output:

Tried loading Desktop effects using: Appearence>visual effects, selected
Normal and got the error:

Desktop effects could not be enabled

Do you have the driver installed from the nvidia site or have you installed the repo version?

I tried installing via the driver from the nvidia site and the driver from envyng. Neither allowed desktop effects to be installed.

They'd be the same driver - I have same driver and desktop effects would work if I wanted. I did have the beta from nvidia - saw you there too

I've removed that and installed the repo driver via hardware drivers - have you?

Yes I have and they show as enabled. Strange thing was yesterday I had desktop effects and when I turned the machine on today the desktop effects are missing.

Not sure then tbh - did you have proposed enabled to get the updated jockey and nvidia installed?

Have you had any updates that could affect compiz - I do vaguely remember some compiz proposed updates yesterday or thursday - but I reverted my sources and it went.

Used Hardware drivers to unload the 96.43.09 driver, rebooted, and then used Hardware drivers to reload the 96.43.09 drivers and now desktop effects are working.
