[SOLVED] Dell 1525 mic port not working in Intrepid?

I put 8.04 on my 1525 and I eventually got the sound figured out, and it all worked fine.
I upgraded to 8.10, and sound works fine, but the mic port does not work anymore. If I set the Input Source to Mic, I can hear sound from the internal mic in the front, but if I select Front Mic, I get nothing. When I mute and un-mute the capture level, it sounds like it's switching something on and off like it used to, but I get nothing from it.
I looked at some guides here, but nothing seems applicable. I have gone through and tried a bunch of things in the Alsa mixer, but nothing has worked. I looked through the list of Alsa codecs, but there none of the drivers for SigmaTel STAC9228 seem to be the one I want.

Hi Sam

I had exactly the same problem with Intrepid on my wife's new Dell Inspiron 1525.

The fix was to append "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and to reboot.

When I did this, the "Digital Input" selector disappeared from the mixer, and the front mic started working (even when it's not selected on "Input Source"... weird).

I upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 back in October on my Inspiron 1525 ... I am wondering if any of you had the following problem with the sound / mic -

Well, when I muted, I heard cackling. Loud enough that I went back to 8.04 after searching around for quite a long time for a fix. I was worried I would eventually do damage to the speakers. Pretty much everything else worked just fine.
