Want to Sync Installations... is it possible?

Well I have ubuntu installed on my desktop (8.10) and really do like it quite a bit. Now I run XP on my laptop for school reasons.... but would also like to use Ubuntu from a bootable usb drive (even if I'm not on my laptop and on someone elses computer).

I'd like to know if I can sync installations from my desktop ubuntu install to a usb key install so that my "Ubuntu Computer" can come with me on the road and I can merge changes that I've made while away from my desktop.

Anyone know if this is possible?
